Immigration Detention Centres
Facilities that are used to detain individuals entering Canada who either fail to establish identity, are deemed a danger to the public or are considered unlikely to appear for future immigration proceedings or removal. The detention is intended for a limited time until a hearing can be arranged. The facilities are under the control of the Canada Border Services Agency under the provisions of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Juvenile/Youth Detention Centres
Facilities that provide for the detention of minors who have been arrested for violating a federal or provincial law or a municipal or local ordinance pending a court hearing or release; and/or which provide for the confinement, treatment, employment, training and discipline of juveniles convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced by Youth or Juvenile Court to serve a period of time in a juvenile detention facility.
Provincial/Territorial Correctional Centres
Facilities operated by provincial/territorial authorities that provide for the confinement, treatment, training and discipline of people who have been convicted of violating a provincial/territorial law or municipal or local ordinance and sentenced by the courts to serve less that two years of imprisonment.
