Description (Service)

Support Services supports children and youth with disabilities and their families, focus on newcomer communities by providing culturally responsive programs

Services include:

  • connecting families to healthcare, disability, educational, and community resources with language-specific service navigation and support

  • Hospital Support Program is provided to children during medical appointments, procedures, and hospital stays with financial assistance for culturally safe meals, parking, and respite care

  • parent coaching with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language pathologists, applied behaviour therapists, and psychotherapists. SMILE covers the cost for five one hour sessions for parents/caregivers

  • Accessibility Fund provides financial assistance for therapy, respite care, and adaptive equipment

  • parent support groups that provide culturally safe and supportive spaces for connection and learning

  • wellness program supports children and youth, along with siblings and parents or caregivers, by offering comprehensive counselling and psychotherapy sessions

In addition to direct family support, SMILE Canada partners with schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations to promote inclusion, accessibility, and culturally responsive practices through workshops, consultations, and educational resources.

Support for Refugees and Newcomers from Palestine, Sudan, and Afghanistan

  • Culturally appropriate service navigation and support to newcomer and refugee Palestinian, Sundanese, and Afghan families with children living with developmental disabilities, physical ailments. mental health, and long-term medical conditions, including cancer

Eligibility Children and youth with disabilities and their families. Child has a disability and/or long-term health condition (formal diagnosis not required) and under the age of 30
Focus on specific ethno-cultural backgrounds navigating services in the languages: Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, and Somali. Assistance request outside of focus areas is determined on a case-by-case basis
Application Needs assessment required; self referral, referral by service provider or healthcare professional. Contact for information; visit website to register and access intake form
