A branch of human rights advocacy organization

Works impartially to prevent violations of people's fundamental civil and political human rights by governments and opposition groups by participating in various campaigning and fundraising activities:  

• carries out letter writing programs, shows films and holds conferences that educate people about human rights issues  
• annual fundraising dinner each June

Of special interest to the Burlington Amnesty group are:

• the human rights situation in Colombia  
• rights of indigenous people in Canada (with a focus on the Amnesty Stolen Sisters campaign)  
• human rights abuses being committed by the People's Republic of China (including in Tibet and Xinjiang)  
• actively campaigning for the release of Mr. Huseyin Celil, a Canadian citizen and Burlington resident, who has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in China
